Being a scientist can be tough at times, when things aren’t working the way they should or when you’re struggling to get money to carry on your research. Sometimes I’ve briefly wished that I had an easy job, but at the end of the day I’m glad I do what I do, and I don’t have any real regrets.
There are some days when I wonder whether I made the right decisions. Usually days when my work isn’t going very well, or when I meet up with friends who are paid a lot more than me.
When I really think about it though and realise how much I enjoy my job and that I’m doing something really worthwhile, I know that I did make the right decision.
Not really, because it has taken me to where I have never imagined I would be. Lots of people say that it’s not really worth it being a scientist, because you highly qualified, but you get paid than a lot of other jobs (banker, lawyer, medical doctor…). However, I love the freedom that this job gives me and the fact that is challenging on so many levels. The only thing that I would like, though, is to have a more stable position, because in science you tend to have only few years contract.
No – any times that I have felt frustrated or unhappy pass reasonably quickly. Also, I am in a PhD program, and only have a year left, so I pretty much have to finish now!
