we- ella and annie; think that it may be good to send the money to cancer research or mcmillans because this would be helping them to find the cure unlike the other scientists on this programme who are using the money for educational benefits only this would be great for the charity as well, and you’d be the only scientist who would be giving the money to charity!!
also is your job being a scientist or is it something you do in your spare time?? 😛

Hi ella and annie.
The rules of the competition mean that we are only allowed to spend the money on communicating or publicising our work. I think it’s really important to tell the public about our work though – especially the kind of work I do, because if people don’t know what makes them more likely to get cancer they won’t be able to change it will they? Does that sound ok to you? Or do you still think we should just concentrate on the research?
Being a scientist is my job and I do it full-time. In my spare time I try to do lots of other things to relax and have fun so that I’m not too tired and worn out to be good at my job.

Hello Jo,
Thank You for explaining what will be done with the money as we had no idea it was for these purposes! Another idea we have come up with for you to spend the money is maybe it would cost a little bit more than £500 though but we think it could be a good idea to set up a room in different parts of hospitals or doctors and set up a thing like ‘family planning’ however a group that would explain causes of cancer but interactive and get the people involved, school children could visit in groups and maybe you could organise an evening where adults would be able to come down and understand what cancer is- my aunty suffered breast cancer a few years unfortunatley she died but I think that for her children and the rest of the family it would have been good for a support group to help them cope with it and maybe for my uncle somwhere where he could meet up with other people who’s partners have died from cancer and then they could all discuss the deaths of the partners and someone could talk them through the cancer, which would help them get to understand the disease and how they can overcome the death of their loved ones.
Thank you for your time, as I know you are very busy
Ella & Annie
🙂 X

Ella & Annie – that is an AMAZING idea! But, yes it would cost lots more than £500 and I don’t think I would have time to do that as well as my main job.
The Macmillan cancer charity have some cancer information centres around the country and some mobile cancer information centres ( a bit like the mobile library vans) where they have trained specialists to talk to people who have cancer or who have family with cancer, and they have support groups. They also give information to anyone who wants to know about cancer.
I don’t know whether they do sessions for school visits, but it’s a really good idea – maybe you should suggest it to them.
I’m really sorry to hear about your Aunty. Maybe if you look it up on their website there will be a Macmillan centre somewhere near you that can help your family. The link to search for a cancer information centre near you is: http://www.macmillan.org.uk/HowWeCanHelp/LocalInformationCentres/FindCancerInformationCentres.aspx
