Well, you could attach an explosive device to them – but I don’t suppose that that is an option.

You can see a jelly baby being tortured here:

Which shows a chemist making a jelly baby ‘explode’. According to here:

      http://resources.schoolscience.co.uk/Salters/pdfs/volone/SCC1_Demo2.pdf

The combustion of the jelly baby is due to oxidisation of carbohydrate in the jelly baby by to the molten potassium chloride in the test tube. That’s not necessarily an easy way of making jelly babies explode, but it’s apparently the most famous way!

      Hi Jessicar784.

Until I saw your question I had no idea that Jelly Babies could be made to explode!!!

Like Leo said though, it seems that putting them into an oxidising agent (like hot Potassium Chloride) can make them explode.

Has your teacher already done this for you? If not, maybe you could ask them nicely??? Maybe you could send your teacher to look at this link: http://static.teachers.tv/shared/wp-content/uploads/sites/1/files/1130.rtf

By putting them in hot potassium diosulphate, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nhBqntL0f4

Its easy, but perhaps a bit dangerous, and you’d be hard pressed to find the potassium diosulphate.

I’m sorry but I don’t know what a jelly baby is…and I hope you don’t mean the babies of a jellyfish mummy :S
