• Question: do you do anything other than cancer research?

      At work I only do research that is related to cancer. I do lots of other things when I’m not at work though.

      Do you mean do I do any other kind of research, or are you asking if I ever do anything in my life except work? 😉 I’ll answer both questions:

      Although my research is mainly focussed on cancer, it could also turn out to be important for some other diseases, like neurodegenerative disease (for example Alzheimers’). That’s because I study cell death, trying to understand how cancer cells manage not to die when they should. But in neurodegenerative diseases, it’s kind of the opposite problem – brain cells die off when they shouldn’t. So if I can understand more about cell death, it might help us have a better understanding of neurodegenerative diseases.

      And as for what I do other than science, I read books, watch football matches, hang out with friends and family, play squash, go walking in the countryside, watch TV…

      Do you mean inside or outside the lab? I suppose in work I am also learning how to be a scientist – which is part of what a PhD is for. I am learning how to write scientifically and how to do experiments… So cancer research, for the moment at least, is certainly a big part of my working day, but isn’t the only thing I do.

      Outside my work, I do lots of other things! I like playing guitar, and watching TV and movies, and taking photographs.

      At the moment all my projects are about cancer research, but in the past I have worked more on basic research on Adenovirus, to understand what it does to a cell when it infects it.
      If you mean if I have interests in other fields of science, then I’m very interested in evolutionary and behavioural biology that try to explain everyday facts of life with the biology behind it.
