Tough one… Does it have to be a solo ‘musician’, or can it be a band?

If I am allowed to state a band, it would be the Beatles. And, for the sake of controversy, the Dillinger Escape Plan – but only because they had such a profound influence on my life, not because they put out uniformly high quality music (their last album was not very good). REM have always been a favourite, but again, they have been awful recently. Pulp, too – who were uniformly great.

If I am only allowed a solo artist, then… Well, it’s a bit of a cop out, as I should probably say David Bowie or someone like that – but let me use this as a good opportunity to promote one of my favourite new artists: Elvis Perkins:

Who is like a cross between Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Neil Young. Amazing.

Also Jeff Buckley, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, John Martyn etc. etc. You could do a lot worse than buy some of their albums.

Look, I’ll be honest – I also like dubstep and grime. My favourite DJs are Plastician, Skream, Distance and I particularly liked the latest album from the hilariously named ‘Dot Rotten’. It just goes to show that there is something about London which seems to inevitably produce new and interesting styles of music.
