I’ve never saved anyone’s life directly. Although, when I was in Thailand we went on a snorkelling trip and no-one else noticed that a man who couldn’t swim had floated away from the boat (in his life-jacket) and I swam out to rescue him.
I hope that my work will make a little contribution towards preventing people from getting cancer – does that count?
I have given blood regularly over the past 5 years – so I am almost certain that I have at least helped! In terms of the science I’ve done, though, I haven’t saved anyone’s life… yet! It would be fantastic to know that some science you did had saved lives. I’d like to go back in time and say to Wilhelm Roentgen, who invented X-ray imaging, that his scientific discovery would save millions of lives.
Thanks kate – I think that all the scientists in this zone hope that their research will help to save lives in the future even if we might not have done yet.
