How do you decide which animal to test on?

Question: How do you decide which animal to test on?

  I use flies for some of my experiments because they are cheap and easy to work with (the cheap part is important since I’m mainly funded by a charity) and because some of the experiments I want to do have to be done in animals, but I don’t personally want to use mice, rats or anything else cute and furry.
  But I don’t ever test drugs, so I’m afraid I don’t know anything about how you would decide what animal to use for testing.

but if something worked on a flie how would you know for defenite it would work on a human?
