Sometimes an idea for how things might work just jumps out at me, and other times I can spend days or even weeks thinking about a problem to try and come up with at theory that I can test.

Often my ideas come at the most surprising of times. My next project arrived at me when I was half asleep. I jumped out of bed at 3 in the morning and just had to write it down, because I didn’t want to forget it.

It’s something hard to define. If it is at the beginning of a project, then you first need to read a lot about what has already been discovered on that subject. Once you are “in” a project, maybe you get quicker at thinking of a new hypothesis. Sometimes it takes months, sometimes weeks, sometimes days, sometimes you can’t think of anything and then suddenly when you are under the shower you find the inspiration!
