Some cancers can take a really long time to grow to the point where they cause symptoms and get diagnosed – it can be 10 or 20 years in some cases.

It really depends on the cancer. Some are easy to spot very early on, if you’re checking for lumps and for moles that change or spread; while for others it can be very hard to spot anything wrong, so it can take a very long time to realise you have cancer.
