• Question: Instead of £500 you were given £50,000 what would you buy?

      £50,000 is a lot of money, and so I would have to think very carefully about where it could go. My first instinct would be to donate it to Cancer Research UK, who I am sure would spend it more productively than I could!

      I could put it into my own team, and put it towards a new ultrasound scanner – or maybe a more powerful computing cluster so that we can process our data more quickly.

      Remember, though, that the money from this prize must go on science communication. £50,000 on science communication is a lot of money, and you could do a great deal towards making your own TV programmes or webcasts. I like the idea of using the money to set up a kind of mobile lab where students can do their own experiments – and I’m sure that they money could get some cool equipment.

      They would allow me to do some research that requires these very special parts.

      If if was for science communication, then I would love to make a documentary series about molecular biology. There are so many things which I think people would find interesting. I’ve even considered writing my own book!

      I think I would use the money to pay for some PhD students so that there were more people trained to be cancer epidemiologists and hopefully to do really great work in the future.
