• Question: was it easy to find a job in science ?

      Because I worked hard at university and got the right qualifications I haven’t found it too difficult to get a job so far. I think that if you want to be a scientist, the most important thing is to work out what you are good at and which little bit of science you enjoy most. Sometimes just being the most enthusiastic about wanting the job can be what wins it for you.

      Once you have the right qualifications, it’s reasonably easy to get a job in science. The problem is that if you work in a university or a research institute, your job isn’t forever. I’ll be looking for a new job soon if I can’t get funding to carry on what I’m doing…

      I found it quite easy to get a PhD position – and I had about 3 or 4 different offers. If you have good A-levels and a good science degree, it’s not like we are overrun with scientists in the UK – you should find yourself choosing where you want to go from a number of options. Saying that, the other scientists might have different stories – and I suppose it is dependent upon which branch of science you wish to work in, and the kind of work you want to do.

      I didn’t have much of a problem. After finishing uni, I contacted a few labs, went to visit a couple, and was offered a place here. Now I know what I want to do, its going to be a lot harder, because there are only a few labs in the world where I can continue my research.
