Yes. Quit. It can be tough, but its worth it. I quite a few weeks back, with the help of nicotine replacement gum, and feel a lot better for it. The first thing I did after quitting was go on a 5k run, and shaved a whole 5mins off of my usual time.
Understanding the health impacts are probably the most important factor in getting the will power to quit. Read up on exactly what smoking does to your body (which, remember, is the only body you’ll get, so you should probably look after it!), and think again about whether or not smoking is really worth it.
The NHS provides plenty of free advice on quitting smoking, too, if will power is not enough in the person’s case.
I would advise them to look on the smokefree website (http://smokefree.nhs.uk/) or call the NHS smokefree helpline (0800 022 4 332) to find out about all the support and treatments (like nicotine replacement) that are available.
I would also advise them to get as much help and support as they can from their friends and family.
If a smoker is seriously worried about getting ill, then they have a good chance of being able to quit. Going to the doctor to get help and advice there would be a very good idea. And when it gets tough, remembering why you wanted to quit in the first place.
