• Question: What is it really like being a scientist? Do you all have mad hair;) joke:P Is it fun or lots of hard work?

      Hey irishpants,

      you can see our hair on the photos…so do you still think that we have mad hair? If you think so, maybe I should change my hairdresser!
      To be a bit more serious, it is a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it because it can give you a lot of satisfaction.

      I only have mad hair first thing in the morning 😉 I try to tame it before I leave the house 😀

      Being a scientist can be a lot of fun. I get to work with some really great people, and at the end of the day I know that I’m doing my best to help other people and make their lives longer and better – there aren’t many jobs where you can say that!

      I think that I work quite hard, and sometimes it can be difficult – sometimes it can take me weeks to think about a problem and figure out what to do next. There’s always plenty of other work to get on with while I’m thinking about it though.

      Being a scientist is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the human endeavour to understand the world around us. It’s challenging, and intellectually stimulating and you get to interact with some of the greatest minds in the world!

      In terms of mad hair – I kind of have mad hair, but not all scientists have mad hair. I like having mad hair.

      There’s no reason to think why doing science shouldn’t be hard – at least, any less hard than any other discipline. Some parts of science are conceptually difficult to understand, and to understand some things requires fully understanding several other layers – but this could be said of almost any other subject. And in any case, the hard work pays off with understanding those challenging concepts, and then furthering that knowledge with your own experiments!

      Some scientists do have mad hair, but then again so do some non-scientists!

      It’s certainly hard work being a scientist, but it’s fun and very rewarding at the same time. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think the hard work was worth it.
