• Question: whats so appealing about doing something not very fun for your career?

      Hi abrahams1.

      There would be nothing appealing about doing something that’s not very fun for your career. Fortunately, I think science is fun! I think it’s really important to have a job that you enjoy, and it’s great that different people enjoy different things.

      I take it that you don’t like science very much? What do you enjoy?

      Don’t forget that there are lots of different types of science, and that knowing a bit about science can help with loads of careers. Pilots need to be good at maths and physics, the forensic scientists like on CSI are good at chemistry and I once met someone who studies penguins in the antarctic.

      I’m not sure I understand your question, but I’ll try to answer!
      I really enjoy my job, even if sometimes can be frustrating, because I’m not getting the result that I want, or boring because I have to repeat the same experiment lots of times because it’s not working. When it’s one of those moments where I’m feeling a bit low because, work is not going so well, I remind myself what is the ultimate goal of my research, curing pancreatic cancer. Putting things in this perspective helps me going through the tough times!

      Well, I do find my career fun. Not all of it, but thats the same for most jobs. The good more than outweights the bad.

      If a job is generally unenjoyable, then I don’t think it is worth doing (unless you have no choice). But to expect a job to be 100 % fun and games is unrealistic. In science, the less enjoyable parts are, for me, completely outweighed by the great satisfaction I get from the other aspects of the job – such as learning new things and helping people with cancer.

      There’s nothing appealing about doing something not very fun for your career. But I love my job; I’d be lying if I said it was fun all the time, but a lot of the time it is.
