I don’t know why people smoke. Some old people smoke because they started before all the health risks were known by the public – and now they’re addicted.
I really don’t know why young people smoke though, because not only is it bad for your health, it’s also expensive, makes you stinky and gives you early wrinkles – doesn’t sound great does it!
I suppose that people start smoking because of many reasons. One could be because their parents do it, or because their friends do it. I think it would be also fair to say that many people smoke because they enjoy it. Smoking, though, is also addictive – so some smoke because they have very little say in the matter!
I think the greatest thing which makes people start smoking is peer pressure, or the desire to look cool. I think peoples attitudes in the UK are changing towards smoking. It doesn’t seem so appealing anymore. Hopefully we can end up like how it is in America, where smoking simply isn’t seen as cool.
People smoke because they enjoy it and because they get addicted to it… like many other drugs, the nicotine in cigarettes is addictive, so your body ‘needs’ more of it. That makes it very hard to stop.
As for why people start smoking in the first place, I suppose there are lots of reasons. Peer pressure is probably a big reason: young people thinking smoking is cool, even though it’s actually not cool at all – there’s nothing cool about smelly breath, dull hair, skin that ages rapidly, yellow fingers, not to mention the massively increased risk of lung cancer and heart disease!
