Colds are caused by an infection from a virus, known as a ‘rhinovirus’ (but nothing to do with a rhinoceros, it comes from the Greek for ‘nose’), although there are over 200 kinds of viruses which cause ‘colds’. These viruses are infectious, meaning that they can find their way into your body after coming into close contact with someone who is infected. Because there are so many different mutated kinds of cold viruses (they almost continuously mutate) it is impossible to be immune to the common cold.
